   The argument that “99% of the cases of child molestation by priests in the US was covered up because it was requested by the family of the victim” is beside the point. The Catholic Church could still have released data other than the victim’s name or the location of the parish. Data like how many actual cases there were.

   Anyway, that was quite a change of topic in the discussion, but still related to the issue of secularism. hehe

   Red, you should add the correction in your statement here in the article.

     99% of the families covering it up doesnt stop it from being a wrong committed by a person of the Church.

       Yep. Unfortunately in the current system, the families have the right not to file a case against the priest. I read somewhere before that in the US, the family also has the right to stop the media from releasing news if the victim is a minor, but maybe it’s limited to identity-revealing info (not sure). Anyway, in the discussion about whether or not it was a cover-up by Church, I’m just saying the argument didn’t hold. And it definitely doesn’t make it right as you pointed out.

   I was surprised with some twitter comments I found where someone was really shocked and offended. e.g. “How can you say that about the Pope!??!” or “I don’t just sit in the corner and pray OMG!!” plus reactions from a priest saying “they’re just angry, ignore them” and such.

   I suspect it’s hard for them to understand that the criticism of the Church is not necessarily criticism of the believers. After reading those comments (admittedly, they are only from a person or two) I am a bit worried about the mainstream acceptance of Rational Hero. I had assumed that a lot of people are of the same view re the Church’s infringement of our rights but I guess that’s not the case? Does anyone really know?

   btw Until the Pope issues you an Official Excommunication you are free to Criticize the Catholic Church. You know the church and its bureaucracy, what does an atheist gotta do to get excommunicated here?
