Perhaps many are familiar with those reassuring words that Christians often say in church and during good times, but few people probably know that they came from a song.
I remember a scene from The Practice where Eugene Young, a defense attorney, was being interviewed by the Governor's Judicial Council for the position of superior court judge. They wanted to know his stand on the death penalty.
One of the issues being debated by freethinkers is the source of our morality. Some atheists postulate that morality is just the product of evolution while agnostics point out that there are cases of altruistic human behavior that have nothing to do with propagating one's genes, and theists claim that our moral values must have therefore come from a Moral Lawgiver.
I believe freethinkers are a proud people in a sense that they often undertake to set themselves up as judges of Truth and Knowledge, laughing at the idea of being shipwrecked by the laughter of the gods. But I also believe that freethinkers are a humble people because they acknowledge their own fallibility.
One of the tactics proselytizers use to try to convert nonbelievers is the appeal to fear. What if you're wrong? What if it turns out there really is a god and you've lived your life on the assumption that there isn't?
Perhaps only the most fundamental of theists actually believe that it was Manny's prayers that got him to win fight after fight from one weight division to another. The moderate theists, on the other hand, probably believe that prayer has at least some bearing on his game, complimenting his hard work and preparation, so if he ever should come face to face with an equally skilled fighter, prayer would tip the balance to his favor.
"Since the Church objects to the use of artificial contraception, the church likewise objects to their dissemination, creating thereby a contraceptive mentality towards a culture of death." - Arch. Angel Lagdameo
Some of us have already acknowledged, albeit reluctantly, that the Church's meddling with the affairs of the State does not violate the Separation mandated by the constitution. But why do we keep on churning articles that attack the Vatican and the CBCP from all angles ranging from Humanae Vitae to the cover-up of sex scandals?
