I was living in the Philippines during the first half of the 1990s. Interesting times: aftermath of Mt. Pinatubo eruption, aftermath of Colonel Honasan’s attempted coup, rejection by Senate to renew American military bases agreement, devolution of government in 1991, a weak Corazon Aquino replaced by a strong-arm military man Fidel Ramos. A fledgling republic recovering from the authoritarian Marcos era. And today, with Duterte, a throwback to autocratic rule. The word “sayang” comes to mind (hope that is the correct word) — something of value not being put to proper use. The Philippine nation and the Filipino people hold great potential, yet that potential still seeks expression and fulfillment. I love you and share your struggle.
