⁃     I’m not (old enough)!: What to do with the decisions made by parents for their kids? (Circumcision, religion, education, gender roles, etc.)

⁃     Secularism in school: What exactly can or should we expect from religious schools? (Angelus, forced participation, unwelcome proselytizing)

We’ll also have a topic toss-up to keep things fresh and spontaneous!

After the meetup, we usually have a post-meetup consisting of dinner, drinks, odd games, or coffee. If you’re not a meetup regular or can’t make it for the meetup, you can attend the post meetup. Please indicate on a post in the wall or comment so we can contact you. Got questions about the meetup? Contact us at:

Southern-Style Freethinking

Filipino Freethinkers in Davao City - June 6, 2012 Meetup

Freethinking 101

We had several newcomers in our latest meetup last Saturday (June 2, 2012) at Harley Boulevard Motor Cafe. FF-Davao founder, Jong Atmosfera, led a short but informative discussion on secularism and freethinking. He reiterated that the focus of freethinking is not so much one’s position (atheist, theist, deist, etc.) but the process at which one arrives there. Thus one need not necessarily be an atheist to be a freethinker. Theoretically, one can believe in god and still be a freethinker as long as he arrives at his conclusion using science, logic and reason. He also stressed that “while we are not promoting atheism, we are promoting a society that is more tolerant of atheists and people of different beliefs.”

Atheism 101

FF-Davao regular Gamahiel “Dodong” Tutor then lived up to his name and gave a short discourse on atheism, recalling his background as a Jehovah’s Witness elder, then dabbling in other religions such as Mormonism and Islam, and then finally cementing his path as an atheist.

Blast 101

After the meetup, some of the members decided that the night was still young and moved to another venue for more drinks, more discussion and more fun. As newcomer Clyde Mante put it, “alcohol + open and informative discussion = blast.”

Join the Fun

If you think you’re missing all the evil in Manila because you live in the southern part of the country, don’t fret. We have our own brand of freethinking in Davao City. Join the FF-Davao Facebook Page for updates and announcements regarding local meetups and other matters.

The Filipino Freethinkers Go to Church! And Meet a Carabao with Wings in Los Banos!

This is the group shot from the meetup last February 5:

There were over 80 attendees that afternoon, and our usual haunt at Starbucks Ansons Ortigas was barely able handle all of that sexiness. So, we felt it was high-time to try out a non-commercial venue the next time around, and what better place could there be to house a bunch of heathens for some sweet, sweet sacrilege than this —

For the following Sunday meetup, the Freethinkers went to church. But it was a very special one — the Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Makati, which is the home church of FF’s Reproductive Health Advocacy Director Kenneth Keng and his family.  The Episcopalians — basically the Anglican Church when set outside of England — are a more liberal bunch compared to Catholics. They have female and homosexual members in their clergy, and generally have a more progressive stance on social issues.

It’s very refreshing to see a church with a sense of humor.

Kenneth and his sister Michelle were awesome enough to arrange for a meetup in their church’s parish hall, a large room where they usually tag-team as Sunday school teachers.

Lot of great discussions that day. Thanks to the hall’s acoustics, which was an honest relief from all that blender-whirring from coffee shop meetups past, we could easily converse on several rich topics, from the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals’ controversial new advertisement, to the current Republican war on contraception in the US.

Bishop Arthur Jones, the Presiding Rector of Holy Trinity, even dropped by to say hi. We very much enjoyed his short speech about always being inquisitive and open-minded. I personally would like to hear one of his sermons — tales of fire and brimstone they’re likely not.

And it seems the Episcopal god took kindly to us, what with the rainbow that appeared when the meeting was adjourned!

And then Red got insecure and started levitating to put us in our place. We’re sorry we doubted you, Red!

The following day, a few of us from FF’s Coordinating Council made the trek to Los Banos, Laguna to attend the meetup of the group’s burgeoning UP- Los Banos Chapter. Chapter director Api, along with LB Freethinkers Ryan, Peter, JM, and Karl were very, very kind enough to take us on a tour that afternoon. We started at the International Rice Research Institute, where we saw a 6,000-year-old grain of rice at the museum; then visited the UP Carabao Center for a quick snack; then took a leisurely trek by the woodsy roads near the Forestry.

We also saw an Abueva sculpture called the “Pegaraw,” although we were smart-asses and pointed out that the winged beast was more of a Pegasus-carabao hybrid, hence it should be called a Pegabao instead, but Kenneth was obviously delighted by it regardless.

Later that evening, we met up with the rest of the chapter for a nice meetup, where we discussed conspiracy theories, Red’s Satanic Challenge, and the chapter’s exciting new projects, which include accreditation in the university. We had dinner and drinks after, and while we had to head back to Manila at the end of the night, we knew we’d definitely be visiting more and more often. Awesome job, FF UPLB!

And I’m so sorry you had to see that.

Heart, Art, and the Occasional Fart

As an alternative to the usual meetup format, FF spent its latest gathering getting our art on at The Collective, albeit early enough to have the warehouse-turned-hipster haven to ourselves.

As it was a pre-Valentine’s meetup, the group first discussed the notion of romantic love and the irrational behavior that it entails. Questions such as Would you die to save your loved one’s life?; Is monogamy the way to go?; and Is masturbating to another person’s image considered cheating? were asked, and generated quite heated discussions.

Afterwards, members showcased their creative skillz to the group:

There were quite a few guitarists in our midst, including Chris…

Garrick…

…and Mark.

The most endearing string-man of them all, however, was Philip, who played a little Spanish ditty for us on his old-skool octavina.

Not to be outdone, the more literary types also had their turn, starting with a scintillating string of culinary haikus from none other than the esteemed Theodocius Chang.

Reighben shared some impromptu verses from his cel’s Sent folder.

I read an excerpt from my short story “Yaya.”

And Ibyang performed a freshly written love poem dedicated to all the Freethinkers.

Despite the different format, last Saturday’s meetup was every bit an FF shindig, featuring a lot of smart, sexy people unafraid to share their passions.

My First Time

It was my first time. I was young and inexperienced with the ways of the world. She was a few years older than I was. Beautiful, stunningly beautiful. She led me to the room. She told me to relax as she slowly pushed me towards the bed. I sat there frozen as she started unbuttoning her blouse. I could see the excitement in her eyes. She started to breathe heavily. I saw sweat beads forming on her chest…

But that’s not how my first time really happened, and that’s not the first time I wanted to write about…

Sunday. 30 January 2011. Starbucks, Ansons Ortigas. The third Filipino Freethinkers meet-up of 2011. My first time.

I’ve been coming and going different online forums for years and years already but around 2009, if I’m not mistaken, a group sprung up from the forums and decided to meet up: the Filipino Freethinkers. I’ve always been interested in meeting the group since I was once part of a similar group back in college, the UP Atheists’ Circle in Los Baños. I regularly receive Facebook event invites to their meet-ups, but I never seemed to find the time, or when I did have time, the thought of driving all the way to Ortigas just killed it for me. (I live in Las Piñas.)

Anyway, I finally went to the meet-up. I was early so I got my usual Venti Soy Latte and grabbed a seat. The FF people then started coming in. I recognized Red Tani since we were FB friends, so I approached him and introduced myself to him and the group. We started to grab chairs and congregated. There were several of us newbies that day and there was even another Jason, an Australian Jason. We introduced ourselves first. Then the “veterans” followed suit.

It was a large group so we were split into two discussion groups. It was a fairly structured group discussion. There were four topics, and everyone had the chance to put in their two cents. I’d rather not delve into the details of the discussions since I do think a thread on the FF forum should take care of that. I think it would be important to note that you don’t have to worry if you’re unfamiliar with the topic, because there will be someone more than willing to put you up to speed on the issue being discussed.

After the discussions and the picture taking, the members invited us to join them for drinks at Congo Grill. There the talks became more informal but fun and intellectually stimulating nonetheless. I had to leave ahead of the group but I would have stayed longer if i could.

I ‘m glad I made the trip to Ortigas. It was worth it. For an atheist living in the Philippines, it tends to be frustrating not to be able to freely share your thoughts and ideas with others since there’s always that big chance you’d hit a nerve when it comes to others’ beliefs. We’re living in a predominantly Christian nation, and Christians are usually sensitive when it comes to their faith. At the FF meet-up, I was among like minds. Not all were atheists, but what mattered was that it was a group of people with open ears and open minds. The discussions made you think. Some may have different views, but that didn’t matter. That’s the beauty of being among freethinkers. We know that there is no absolute truth and that we’re all entitled to our own truths, ergo, there is no need for conflict during discourse amongst freethinkers. Basically, you’d get a healthy exchange of views and ideas.

The FF people were also very welcoming. I could see that many of them have already formed tight bonds, but they never make you feel left out. And of course, nothing beats conversations over alcohol. Twas a fun first time and it will surely not be my last.
