Is the CBCP violating the separation of Church and State?
June 30th, 2010 at 7:30 pmI agree. I guess it’s time we make the government accountable for their violations. Great post, Jong!
Drowning in Baptismal Waters
June 25th, 2010 at 12:01 pmIt doesn’t matter if it’s only done once a century. If this were a private event that only affected those who willingly celebrated it, then I’d have no problems with it. The thing is, public resources (the water, the firetrucks, the street) are used in a way that is not in the interest of the general public — only a few citizens. Now if those who opted not to join the celebration were given equivalent funds to throw their own parties, then that could be cause to reconsider. But that would obviously be highly impractical, and for fairness’ sake, it’s better to avoid such practices in the first place.
Drowning in Baptismal Waters
June 24th, 2010 at 6:36 pmWere you actually there to take these pics, Wes?
By the way, they also failed to consider the effect of such a wasteful practice on our economy, let alone the environment.
June 14 is World Blood Donor Day
June 11th, 2010 at 9:02 pmWho’s willing to coordinate this? Wes? Frank?
The Ethics of Veganism
June 9th, 2010 at 11:13 pmDefinitely worth a follow-up discussion. Nancy, you have your work cut out for you on our next meetup
The Ethics of Veganism
June 9th, 2010 at 11:12 pmI admire your civility, Tim, as well as the Frank-ness of those who called you out on your initial lack of it. Kudos, guys
Filipino Freethinkers = Atheist Preachers?
June 9th, 2010 at 8:53 pmYou don’t have to preach atheism — though there’s nothing wrong with people who want to do this. I myself prefer promoting thinking based on reason, science, and secularism. When you tell someone who subscribes to Christian Science that they should choose medicine over prayer to cure their children, are you preaching atheism? It just so happens that reason and science go against religious thinking that some assume what’s being promoted is atheism.

Saturday Meetup: June 12 at Shangri-la Starbucks
June 8th, 2010 at 4:23 amThe vegan discussion might not even happen this Saturday. But in any case, it’s your choice whether you want to participate in the discussion. But some people — myself included — appreciate discussing a topic from many angles. If you’re not rubbing some people the wrong way, you’re doing it wrong

Saturday Meetup: June 12 at Shangri-la Starbucks
June 7th, 2010 at 11:35 amWe moved it to Saturday thinking more people would be available. Anyway, we can consider alternating between Saturdays and Sundays. Let’s see

Looking forward to Nomad as well.
Genital Mutilation
June 7th, 2010 at 1:26 amIniiwasan mo ata kami e
Anyway, there will be one on Saturday — same time, same place. I’ll post the meetup invite soon.
Genital Mutilation
June 7th, 2010 at 1:13 amThis reminds me of baptism — how children are raised from infancy into a belief system not of their choosing.
Thanks for posting this, Benj! Attend ka na sa next meetup ha
The Ethics of Veganism
June 6th, 2010 at 11:27 pmFrank is right. Before discussing veganism/vegetarianism, we should have first read this and watched the videos you and Ram mentioned. Maybe we can continue the discussion on our next meetup. You and Ram could teach practical first steps to those who are interested in living the nonmeat-eating lifestyle. Anyway, thanks for writing this, Nancy. (And on such short notice

Sex Education by DepEd and CBCP: Two Steps Forward, One Step Back
June 6th, 2010 at 10:57 pmAgreed. I’ve updated the link with my favorite source — and an internationally recognized expert on the matter. Thanks for the suggestion, Tim
Sex Education by DepEd and CBCP: Two Steps Forward, One Step Back
June 6th, 2010 at 10:18 pmI wasn’t presenting new information or supporting evidence for anything I said. It was meant to start a new conversation. More of an aside rather than something integral to the argument presented by the post.
But in any case, Wikipedia is a good enough starting point for anyone who wants to do any kind of research. The problem is when the researcher doesn’t check the sources cited, or when they content themselves with using Wikipedia as their only source. But as far as getting started, Wikipedia works well enough.

Homosexuality and Islam
May 18th, 2010 at 10:48 amThanks for this post, Taric. I can confirm that my Muslim friends here and in Indonesia are more tolerant than what’s usually portrayed in the media.
And I agree. More than the power itself it’s the fear of losing control that makes these institutions do what they do. The problem is, they blame their actions on a high power. If there were no higher power to blame their megalomania would be painfully obvious — maybe even to themselves.

May 12th, 2010 at 9:31 pmThanks for the lesson, teacher Wes. Looking forward to our next class!
Iglesia ni Cristo's brand of democracy
May 12th, 2010 at 8:45 pmThere’s a good way of looking at Risa not being in the top twelve: if I were in her place, I wouldn’t want to be elected by the same people who voted for most of the people on that roster, especially the ones on top. Still, I would’ve wanted her to win.
Anyway, welcome back, Benj! Nice post
Meetup: May 16 at Shangri-la Starbucks
May 11th, 2010 at 7:16 pmYup. That’s the idea.
I’m also thinking of a better way to judge entries. I’m thinking that those who have entries have the most say in who wins.
Anyway, we’ll get to brainstorm about this some more this Sunday. If things go well the contest should be posted Monday morning
Prayer in Politics
May 11th, 2010 at 5:53 pmOne of the reasons I like the elections is it proves prayers do not work, even when large groups pray for the same thing. Except the INC
Meetup: May 16 at Shangri-la Starbucks
May 11th, 2010 at 2:27 pmI just thought of an idea that could work. The winner gets to donate the prize to the FF library. But the winner gets to read it first and keep it in their personal library till someone borrows it. This way we could encourage writers and grow our library at the same time. What do you think?
