Eliseo Soriano’s Imaginary Argument

broelisIf you’re a Christian or to be specific, a member of Eliseo Soriano’s “Ang Dating Daan” or ADD for short, chances are you’ve already read Soriano’s triage against atheism.

Using Soriano’s blog post (The Claim That There Is No God Is An Escape From All Realities), well what can I say…maybe instead of making a rebuttal I think it would be fitting to make an article about “How not to debate an atheist” instead. Using Mr. Soriano’s article we’re going to talk about poor methods employed by amateur apologists in dealing with atheism.

If we read the entire article there really isn’t any argument presented. Most of his blather doesn’t embark upon the issue of atheism and believe me, quoting Bible verses is really a poor tactic when dealing with atheism. Remember, to face an atheist Mr. Soriano should gave us a good reason why atheism is not a rational position.

So if we remove all the useless Bible verses in the article that tell us nothing about atheism, we are left with…eh nothing to talk about.

Stalin, Pol-Pot and Hitler?
After writing nothing about atheism, Mr. Soriano then included some infamous character to enhance his so-called argument.

So may I ask, “What’s the connection?”

Ah…these people were “atheists” so they killed a lot of people. Is that it?

But Joshua and Samson also killed a lot of innocent people? In fact, if you read the Bible, God’s generals also find it irresistible to do wanton killing of women, old folks, children and even cattle and live stocks.

Those Islamic terrorists that crashed jumbo jets in buildings, they believe that a god exists. Jim Jones, Mussolini, Franco and Saddam Hussein, these people also believe in a supernatural Supreme Being as Baise Pascal quoted, “Men never do evil so completely and cheerfully as when they do it from religious conviction.”

But unlike Mr. Soriano, I will not say that since some theists are capable of killing, therefore all theists are killers. Guilt by association is a poor way to male a valid point.

How About Hitler?
What does Hitler got to do with atheism?

Did Mr. Soriano know that Hitler is also a believer like him?

There is no evidence whatsoever that Adolf Hitler was an atheist. In fact, on his book Mein Kemp and his speeches, Hitler always mentioned God. Not only was Hitler a Christian, but he used Christianity to justify his acts against the Jews.

Here’s an example taken from one of his speeches:

My feelings as a Christian points me to my Lord and Savior as a fighter. It points me to the man who once in loneliness, surrounded only by a few followers, recognized these Jews for what they were and summoned men to fight against them and who, God’s truth! was greatest not as a sufferer but as a fighter.

In boundless love as a Christian and as a man I read through the passage which tells us how the Lord at last rose in His might and seized the scourge to drive out of the Temple the brood of vipers and adders. How terrific was His fight for the world against the Jewish poison. To-day, after two thousand years, with deepest emotion I recognize more profoundly than ever before in the fact that it was for this that He had to shed His blood upon the Cross. As a Christian I have no duty to allow myself to be cheated, but I have the duty to be a fighter for truth and justice…. And if there is anything which could demonstrate that we are acting rightly it is the distress that daily grows. For as a Christian I have also a duty to my own people…. When I go out in the morning and see these men standing in their queues and look into their pinched faces, then I believe I would be no Christian, but a very devil if I felt no pity for them, if I did not, as did our Lord two thousand years ago, turn against those by whom to-day this poor people is plundered and exploited.-Adolf Hitler, in his
speech in Munich on 12 April 1922

[Note, “brood of vipers” appears in Matt. 3:7 & 12:34. John 2:15 depicts Jesus driving out the money changers (adders) from the temple. The word “adders” also appears in Psalms 140:3]

I hope I’ll find better arguments on Mr. Soriano’s continuation of his article, but for now, all in all, his first part was rather dull and boring. It seems Mr. Soriano is just a beginner when it come in dealing with atheism.

Remember, when a God believer face an atheist or plans to disprove atheism, the issue is not to slander the atheists but to show that not believing in a god or gods is unreasonable.

Until next time,

John the Atheist

  2. For all the Atheist I really feel pity on you. I will pray to my father in heaven to enlightened your mind and to wake you up and to open you eyes in the darkness where you came from. Just give some time to question yourself. Just like Why I am here? why I am alive and where I came from? What is my purpose here. The Bible contains the mind of God, the state of man, the way of salvation, the doom of sinners and the happiness of believers. Be prepared for our redemption is near.

    • Mara, pretending that the god of the universe revolves entirely around YOUR world view, and that they would move mountains, perform miracles, or in our case, make us suffer somehow because you don;t like us, is far more despicable and painfully stupid than the arrogance you accuse us of.

      • hahaha….look whos talking…sino ang arrogant…Im not pretending because i use my head…i use my logic…kung kayo wla nun..stop spreading that disease to mankind…kung gusto nyo ng magulo,,wag kyo mangdamay ng mga tao matitino ang isip…mga tao marunong tumanaw ng utang na loob sa Dios…

        • And how, exactly, did your logic lead you to thinking you can communicate with God?

*Pulls up a chair and popcorn*

          • that's what rational pipol can do..that you can't!!!bleh!!!inggit ka lng..logic mo kasi low class..so literal so shallow…poor man..

    • Bobo? Funny coming from a pinay who can't even spell properly, or assumes that just because we don't like religion means we like Starbucks.

What's even more bobo is you accusing us of simply wanting to lead hedonistic lifestyles hence our dislike of the bible. Mara, if we truly were as sex-starved as you claim, we'd be QUOTING the fucking bible:

Utang na loob naman mara – pag-aralan mo naman ang bibliya bago mo pa man mabigyan ng karagdagang sakit ng ulo ang iyong kapwa pinoy dahil sa iyong kabobohan.

        • Well you tried to compare elitism to Starbucks. I'm not sure how both play on each other.

Personally, Starbucks is too plebian for my tastes – UCC has better class, and their risotto dishes are delicious to the point of sinful.

          • well…ang tamaan wla nang logical na maisagot,…hahahha…im so happy that most of the pipol still have their sound minds…well…hay…mag sumiksik kayo sa blog nyong ..hahha kayo kayo lng nagbabasa..well…ibigay ang kakarampot na kaligayahang ng wla nyong katutururang ipinglalaban…

CaN I ask you some question?

  6. hope that it's the only thing he share with the gay vampire…

(sorry sa mga fans ng twilight…) ^_^

for someone who hates a "social climber / pasosyal", the words that he used kinda remind me of one…

  7. Ooh.. I must defend Starbucks.

Starbucks (or any coffee shop) is a great place to sit and talk, relax and have discussions with friends. Their coffee is expensive so that's probably why some ignorant people assume only rich people or wanna-be-rich people or people-who-are-pretending-to be-rich go there. But when my friends and I go there, like to hangout after dinner, or just to meet and discuss, not everyone necessarily buys drinks. You don't have to buy one to be able to stay there, just as long as at least one in your group buys a drink then you can all stay there and talk for as long as you like! This is not official Starbucks policy or what but I've done this many times with my friends, not only in Starbucks, but in other coffee shops as well. Also, it's more convenient to meet in an easy-to-locate Starbucks branch than in some other location that may not be known to all involved.

My impression of Starbucks is a coffee shop, not a party place, so I don't get how "social-climbers" get to do some social climbing activities in a coffee shop?? (Pardon my limited knowledge of social climbing.) I think a lot of call center agents go to Starbucks because they probably find it a relaxing way of taking a break and they're the ones who can afford the expensive coffee hehehe There may be some call center agents who are "social climbers" but I don't see what Starbucks have anything to do with it ??

Maybe brightguy is allergic to "social climbers" and he assumes Starbucks is crawling with them and that's why he hates Starbucks so much. But he is just being judgmental.

I am a Starbucks fan because I like their Coffee Jelly and their array of coffee beans. Bow.

    • The coffee is indeed overpriced, but I do like the ambience they create with their layout, choice of soft jazz and comfy chairs 🙂

If I wanted coffee though, I'd buy at Figaro – a shame their wicker chairs are no fun to sit on at all 🙁

      • Really? What coffee do you buy in Figaro? From all the coffee shops I've tried, Starbucks serves the yummiest coffee, but also the most expensive (or would that be Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf?) Anyway, I haven't tried much in Figaro (maybe just latte or what), so I'm willing to give it a shot (Starbucks vs Figaro — who will emerge victorious?!!)

BTW, I think it's also better to discuss serious things over coffee rather than over a meal or over beer hehehe! Beer is for fun talk, not serious talk ^_^

      • Maybe he's Edward Cullen (Twilight) – his skin sparkles in daylight so it's bright – so he's a bright guy! LOL okay that was really corny hehehe

    • @lucius_ferrer
asus! spoken of a true patay gutom social climber..

      • Hi eh "brightguy",

Ok…whats with Starbuck got to do with this? And what's with the salary issue.

OK let's make a deal.

Are you willing to protect Soriano's argument. OK…you're welcome to do it…basta ba rational lang ang pag-papaliwanag mo.

So I would like to encourage you to show your reason kung bakit mo pinapanigan si Mr. Soriano.

Diba, "Do not do unto other what you do not want to be done unto you".

So if you will start acting like "Isang Kaibigan", then I may start trating you guys (ADD members) as human being hindi mha yapping dogs. OK?

Remember, your faith is on stake here, not mine.

      • Oh, so now it's a "class war" eh?

You obviously have no fucking idea regarding the lifestyle of the people on this blog – so keep your baseless assumptions where they belong – that gobshite you call an ass.

  10. Eli Soriano is one funny senseless Filipino character
much more funnier than the spoof character Brod Pete.

He is full of crap and knows nothing about what he is
    preaching.

      • An atheist's Darwinian impulse was no match to Bro. Eli Soriano, the Filipino preacher whose blog won the 2009 Mashable Most Educational To Follow, in the Bible Exposition held in Batangas, Philippines last February 8, 2011. Unaware of the shame he will…

    • ang taong di na madepensahan ang sarili…kung anuanu sinasabi to cover their irrational arguments…well poor freethinkers..kapeng tindahan lng iniinom ko..alam ko tama sa mali..ask you self anu n ba nagawa nyo sa mundo/…WALA.i challenge you..kung kaya nyo maging international,,pakita nyu…hahaha…

    • And you Tubbah you simply talk about that useless comparison to Bro. Eli. Why don't you dare to to fight him in the debate to know the truth.

  11. That (Soriano's Argument) is a load of horseshit.

His philosophy is a cheap way to go for the vulgar, weak, and uneducated masses.

It's better for Catholicism, at least it offers a cheap variant and a deluxe one. hehe

  12. Stalin, and Polpot were atheists, but they did not do terrible deeds "in the name of atheism."

Stalin and Polpot perpetrated terrible crimes against humanity in the name of their political agenda, i.e. communism. They did not say to their victims, "you deserve to die because you believe in God. Convert to our atheism, or perish." No, they said, "you deserve to die because you are not communist. Covert to our political ideologies, or perish." Pretty much like religion, don't you think?

And Hitler? I don't know whether he was atheist or Christian. But his irrational belief in the superiority of his race? Their fanatical, unquestioning, close-minded approach to "reality"? The Nazis may or may not have been atheists, but their ridiculous ideologies, political and otherwise, were VERY close to religion.

To religious people, I say: Stop treating atheism as if it were a religion, because it isn't. People don't commit murders "in the name of atheism" or atheistic beliefs.

The advantage of atheism is that atheists rely on reason. On facts. On REALITY. So when people disagree on one thing, all they need to do is go back to their research, their experimentation, their studying. Eventually, when the truth is discovered, all previous disagreements will dissolve, and minds will once more converge IN PEACE.

On the other hand, look at your religions. So petty, so self-serving. If they disagree on something, what do they do? They bicker. They argue. They fight. Worst comes to worst, they kill each other, bomb each other. Schisms will form where once there was unity, schisms that will foster generations upon generations of hatred, prejudice, and bigotry, and murder. And because their beliefs and opinions are not founded on observable FACT, they cannot simply go back to their research, experimentation, and studying, as reasonable people do. And because of this, they can never settle their disagreements. Schisms will stay schisms, until one sect is destroyed or the other.

Religion DIVIDES humanity. That's why we have so many religions who can't agree with each other, or they pretend to agree while deep inside they whisper, "ah, these guys are worshiping the wrong God, they'll go to hell for sure." Such arrogance.
Please, PLEASE, religious people. Use your minds. If God truly exists, and he is as good and as just and as loving as you say he is, I am pretty certain he gave you a mind for a good reason. And that is not to blindly obey everything a religious leader will tell you. Remember, religious leaders are HUMANS, and are prone to selfishness, prejudice, hatred, bias, stupidity. DO NOT make the mistake of being led around like blind sheep.

    • MaeharaShinobu90 contends that atheists are SUPERHUMAN and aren't prone to selfishness, not prejudiced, love everyone, have no bias, and most definitely not stupid!

      Go for it, MaeharaShinobu90!

      • Haha, where ever did you get THAT idea??

I am merely reacting to the ridiculous notion some religious people have that Hitler, Stalin, etc. killed people "in the name of atheism". Because it is simply not true.

And yes, reasonable people DO have prejudice, selfishness, etc. etc. But you do not see them dividing into MURDEROUS, unthinking sects just because others do not agree with them.

Did Hitler, who some people purport was an atheist, kill millions of innocents because he was angry those people believed in God? No, he killed them because his beliefs were based on some irrational notion that his race was superior, and that everything the Nazis did were just and virtuous. Atheist or no, this brand of irrationality is as close as you can get to religion.

And religion has always had this problem.

If I don't believe in God, I am immediately condemned to hell. If I don't believe in the same things you do, I am not worthy of heaven. If I am not a Christian, or a Muslim, or a Hindu, I am the BAD GUY.

Many people of reason now may seem arrogant. But that is our reaction to centuries of abuse by the religious. Look at the Dark Ages. Several centuries of an almost complete cessation of science and progress, because someone decided faith was more important than reason, irrationality better than rationality. And who was it that brought those ages to a close? The man of reason.

If the man of reason had not risen out of the Dark Ages, we would not have modern medicine. We would not have computers, television, the radio. We would not have freedom of speech. We would not have modern education. We would not have laws against slavery and child abuse. Damn it, we would probably not have Harry Potter, because J.K. Rowling would have probably been burned at the stake as a witch.

We thinkers may seem arrogant, but that is only because we are AFRAID. We are afraid of what religion can do to the world. Because we have already seen the damage it can do – the Dark Ages, 9/11, the Crusades, the witch hunts, the exorcisms of mentally insane people, the hate-mongering, and all the anti-progress, anti-science, anti-questioning, anti-equality, anti-freedom-of-speech, and ultimately anti-reason sentiments that they engender in their followers.

We are afraid of the world being plunged into another Dark Ages. Because that is what religion is doing whenever it says, "don't ever think for yourself. Just follow blindly."

        • Actually, people do burn Harry Potter books today, on account of witchcraft.

Funny they haven't gotten around to torching the Twilight series.

          • Twilight is an exception. I think the atheists, agnostics, and religious should band together to burn that shit down. (no offense to Twilight fans)

        • I was just reacting to your last paragraph where you mentioned religious leaders being human.

I just cant take condemning people for their beliefs or making a sweeping argument that all members of a certain belief are evil and helplessly stupid.

I believe that people should be free to believe in whatever we choose to believe in. That is the offshoot of our intellect and free will.

Evil is the result of one's choosing what is not good over what is good. Sadly, this is also an offshoot of our intellect and free will. This means everybody is capable of it and there are far too many of us who happily engage this capability of ours.

Is a person's belief system responsible for his evil act? No, if there is nothing fundamentally evil in it. That is why there are good Republicans and bad Republicans, good Atheists and bad Atheists, good Christians and bad Christians, good Muslims and bad Muslims.

Can a person's belief system be the reason for a person's evil acts? Yes, if there is something fundamentally wrong with it. If I uphold the mistaken belief for example that "not all people are created equal," I can be a Klansman, SS Officer, an ultra-nationalist, an intolerant Christian, or even an intolerant Atheist for that matter.

It would be unrealistic to expect people to believe in one thing, this would be counter to our free will and intellect. We can however choose to be tolerant of other people's beliefs and be respectful of them, if they mean no harm to us or anybody else, and get along in our diversity.

BTW, I like the way that you present your ideas in a rational manner, MaeharaShinobu90! Peace!

          • I’m a big fan of free will, of freedom. I believe that we, as human beings, have every right to choose what we want to believe in. If religion is what rocks your boat, then sail away. If reasoning does it for you, then go ahead and reason.

But you have to admit, some religions make it VERY hard for its adherents to make truly independent choices. We are often told that God gave us free will. But the moment a member of a religious community develops a few ideas that are in contradiction with his particular religion’s beliefs and principles, he is quite often branded as a heretic, a blasphemer, a misguided, ignorant fool. And that person, because he is only a human being and therefore a social animal, will experience the excruciating fear of being ostracized by his beloved support group. In the end, it’s either become a sheep, or face the penalty for being a non-conformist.

Let’s take fanatical Muslim terrorist Muslim as an example. Of course, every fanatic HAS the capacity and capability to stop, think about what he's doing, and change his ways. But guess what? His irrational religious views, his irrational religious leaders, and his irrational religious community PREVENTS him from doing that. “Go blow some buildings up, and you go to heaven. If you don’t, you go to hell.”

Today, the Christian world is far less barbaric. There has been progress. But there are some rather frightening Christian movements today that are worth noting.

The Creationists. They are attempting to undo centuries of research, discovery, and learning by saying such inane things as, "The universe is only 6000 years old." "Human beings and dinosaurs co-existed, and Noah had to load dino babies into his ark along with the other animals."

Yes, some of it is incredibly, laughably stupid. So stupid that you might consider it harmless. But what if this is just the beginning? Some Christians today (and I don't only mean the Creationists) are becoming ever more zealous about taking the Bible literally. Gays and non-Christians are already condemned as evil. Will we be attacking women, and removing them from places of authority, next? I know some Born Again Christians who actually believe in this tripe, that women should just stay home and raise children! They believe the reason modern society is failing is because women don't bow down to the authority of men! How medieval an attitude is that?

I also don't believe in condemning people for their beliefs. But for some religions, to be a true believer, you HAVE to look down on others. You HAVE to think that only you will be saved, because everyone else is worshiping a false God.

And when people are SCARED into believing these things, when they are THREATENED with hellfire and excommunication for not taking the Bible or the Koran literally, free will flies out the window, and we become mindless cogs in the machine. And that is when we open the door to real evil.

This is why we must always question, always think, always reason. No one is perfect. Not the religious, not the atheists, not the agnostics. It would be extreme folly, and extremely dangerous to believe, as unfortunately some religions would have as believe, that we are in sole possession of the universal truth.

      • I don't think I've ever met a non-believer who ever said they were superhuman (there are the Narutards, though they're an entirely different matter).

They are prone to the same emotions and flaws everybody else have – they can be selfish, they can have their biases, and they can be misinformed, and they certainly cannot stop bullets.

In short, they are human. And it is because they fully understand their humanity that they will strive to learn and improve themselves. They may have their flaws, but they always strive to outgrow them.

Hala!, are you sure you're not here to troll us? I can almost see the sarcasm dripping through all this pointless adulation you're throwing around.

    • @Maehara

Actually, Hitler has on more than one occasion drawn upon his Christian faith to bolster his hate against Jews. Here is one such quotation from the man himself:

"My feelings as a Christian points me to my Lord and Savior as a fighter. It points me to the man who once in loneliness, surrounded by a few followers, recognized these Jews for what they were and summoned men to fight against them and who, God's truth! was greatest not as a sufferer but as a fighter.

In boundless love as a Christian and as a man I read through the passage which tells us how the Lord at last rose in His might and seized the scourge to drive out of the Temple the brood of vipers and adders. How terrific was His fight for the world against the Jewish poison.

To-day, after two thousand years, with deepest emotion I recognize more profoundly than ever before the fact that it was for this that He had to shed His blood upon the Cross.

As a Christian I have no duty to allow myself to be cheated, but I have the duty to be a fighter for truth and justice… And if there is anything which could demonstrate that we are acting rightly it is the distress that daily grows. For as a Christian I have also a duty to my own people."

-Adolf Hitler, in a speech on 12 April 1922 (Norman H. Baynes, ed. The Speeches of Adolf Hitler, April 1922-August 1939, Vol. 1 of 2, pp. 19-20, Oxford University Press, 1942)"

So let's just call Eli Soriano's accusation what it truly is – utter, deluded bullshit from a dumbfuck who refuses to face reality and, among other things, his pending rape charge of a member of his pulpit.

        • What makes him any different from a zealot who commits atrocities in the name of their belief, under a sincere notion that they are doing the right thing?

          • No different from clergymen selling indulgences. Or imams stoning a woman for adultery.

Inasmuch as bastards like the Nazis justify their atrocities under religious fervor, so can fundamentalists, or anyone with a religion, for that matter.

        • Which means exactly what? Religion is blameless, that Hitler twisted religion to his own purposes?

What about those millions who followed him under the cover of religion which you say was twisted or used as a cover. Is religion really a good thing considering what you have just said?

          • Igme, to be fair, a large number of people around the world also risked their lives to protect victims of the Holocaust, the more prominent ones being indoctrinated into Israel's Righteous Among the Nations list.

The Catholics within the list acted out of a genuine sense of compassion for their fellowmen according to their understanding of their faith. Religion had as much an influence in them risking their lives as it did in propelling Hitler to commit his crimes.

As for the millions who followed him, I'm led to believe that most of them followed out of fear of being marked as a symapthizer by the Gestapo, rather than a real sense of nationalism.

      • Okay, I retract that statement regarding Eliseo raping a member of his church. I can't find any hard evidence of it at the moment, and it would be irresponsible of me to keep asserting.

But he is still a fuckwit

  13. 1. Kudos to you man. I attempted reading Eli's blog post, and could go no further than the first few lines before realizing I had an near-uncontrollable urge to break something. You have balls. I won't even begin to describe the godbot commenters there.

    2. That Eli actually took the time to stop dissing INC, his archnemesis, to lay down the hate against atheists and the like is most flattering. If we pissed this grumpy old man enough to merit his attention, then it means we've hit the big time! LOLZ.

    • Balls…hmmmm I remember Chef's food cart from South Parks.

(Yes, fellow free thinkers, we all have to watch South Park twice or more if we want try to achieve pinoyatheist-like awesomeness!)

Rock on and go for it, pinoyatheist!

    • There's a really big billboard of his smirking sanctimonious mug along Tomas Morato that says "Eli Soriano, the most sensible preacher in (sic) our time".
