Velarde: RH Bill will lead to slavery

I’ve been trying to figure out the best way to explain secularism. Suddenly Reproductive Health Advocacy Network (RHAN) secretary general Elizabeth Angsioco showed me the strongest argument for separation of church and state:

Mike Velarde speaking about how the RH Bill will lead to slavery, among other things.

Here’s one of those times when no amount of reason can be as instructive as absolute ignorance. Though this education comes at a high price: listening to the entire sermon will insult your intelligence and ruin your day. And give you dandruff.

  1. we are slaves… hindi ba pinipilit tayo ng gobyerno na tumawid sa tamang tawiran? may kaparusahan kapag nahuling kang nag jaywalking…

dapat tutulan ang anti jaywalking law!!

  2. Check this blog: Reproductive Health Bill: It’s Evil, Not Just Wrong

THE Philippine Congress has been pushing for the enactment of a very controversial bill that would turn successful employers into slaves. This evil bill is none other than the Reproductive Health Bill, which seeks to make it mandatory for employers to provide reproductive health services for their employees. The most proper question is not whether this proposition is legal or injurious to the interests of employers; it is whether or not a person has the right to enslave his neighbor on account of his need. Need is not a claim or a license to enslave other people.

I oppose RH Bill not on the grounds of religious argument (that it is anti-Life), but because it is not part of the function of a government to institutionalize slavery, by sacrificing one group to another group. I do not share the sentiments of the religionists and the Catholics that this bill is pro-abortion or against the sanctity of life. I believe this proposition is anti-Life, but I do not agree with the religious position and definition of the term. To me it is anti-Life in the sense that it kills man’s motivation to achieve and the value of man’s achievement. The government seeks to penalize the employers because they are economically stable and successful. It means that anyone who would achieve something in the future would be regarded as fodder for other people’s need. It means that those who love life and achievement would have to fall in line before a sacrificial altar simply on account of their achievement, while those who have not achieved would simply have to collect sacrificial offerings.

  3. So Mr.Velarde thinks that Ondoy was a good thing, that it was the plan of god, since it prevented the passing of the bill? I presume Mr.Velarde didn't know that it devasted lives of filipinos.

  4. @Ako Si Gundam – I take it your suggestion of violence as a solution is all in jest. After all, the thing about freethinkers is that we don't put a gun to the heads of those of which we're intolerant. That's what fundies do.

  5. Twin-Skies: Look, it's not that I disagree with them, but that I let them keep their convictions… six feet under!

Tolerance is a double-edged sword. It has the tendency to let stupidity and fundamentalism co-exist with reason. We really should be intolerant against such hypocrites.

  6. @Ako Si Gundam

And nothing gets us into hot water faster than threatening violence against those we disagree with 🙁

Besides, all that'll do is make them martyrs to their cause.

  7. no one is forcing anyone to use contraceptives. the goal is not to exterminate the population but to manage it. we do not have enough schools, enough hospitals, enough food, enough jobs to sustain the population. if we look at countries which have successfully managed theirs the quality of life is so much better.

    mr. velarde. stop the misinformation.

  8. What Velarde and his fundamentalist cohorts need is a hole in the head. Because nothing solves debates faster than a loaded gun.

  9. I think it's only fair to give Mike Velarde a degree of credibility when he talks about slavery and blnd obedience.

After all, he's speaking from experience, being the leader of a conservative evangelical Christian group and all.

Seriously, at least he didn't try playing the Hitler card.

  10. If you spend all of your time arguing with people who are nuts, you'll be exhausted and the nuts will still be nuts.

  11. i wish they would read the entire bill before they make a fool of themselves…

but then again, what did we expect from this guy?
