What The Faith — The Baldy, the Babes, and the Bears

Baldy, the Bears, and the Babes

In his first post in our new Nerd Word segment, Frank argued that Science is more interesting because it always brings something new, while Religion is boring ’cause it’s been the same old Bible from the beginning.

This may be true for apologists, fundamentalists, and nonbelievers, but for most Christians, it’s a different story. If they actually spend the time to read the Bible beyond the homily-approved stories, they’ll be surprised.

Each new chapter and verse they actually read makes the Bible fresh and alive. And if they’re lucky, maybe — just maybe — they’ll run into those precious WTF moments.

Our first episode comes from 2 Kings 2:

2:23 And he went up from thence unto Bethel: and as he was going up by the way, there came forth little children out of the city, and mocked him, and said unto him, Go up, thou bald head; go up, thou bald head.

2:24 And he turned back, and looked on them, and cursed them in the name of the LORD. And there came forth two she bears out of the wood, and tare forty and two children of them.

Beautiful. Who says the Bible is boring?

There you have it folks. What The Faith. Actual stuff in the Bible you’ll only buy if you have What? The Faith.

  1. @Jong: WTFaith!?

@Francis: Yup, the Bible is atrocious, absurd, and evil, but definitely not boring.

@wes: It'll only work if you sic 'em in the name of God though. Not sure how effective it is for us nonbelievers 😉

  2. I somehow disagree at some level to the opinion that the Bible is boring. Why, there's sex (Sodom and Gomorrah) , there's action (David and Goliath), there's fantasy (Jonah and the whale, creation myth, parting of the Red sea), there's thrill and horror (Revelations). I think it's quite an adult book as much as it is for kids fond of literature. I'm sure it's not that well written though, but who doesn't like a book with all those things, plus with profanity, and still claim to be the work of God? 🙂

  3. For six days, work is to be done, but the seventh day shall be your holy day, a Sabbath of rest to the LORD. Whoever does any work on it must be put to death. — Exodus 35:2

(Numbers 15:32) – "Now while the sons of Israel were in the wilderness, they found a man gathering wood on the sabbath day. 33And those who found him gathering wood brought him to Moses and Aaron, and to all the congregation; 34and they put him in custody because it had not been declared what should be done to him. 35Then the Lord said to Moses, "The man shall surely be put to death; all the congregation shall stone him with stones outside the camp." 36So all the congregation brought him outside the camp, and stoned him to death with stones, just as the Lord had commanded Moses."
